The
artistic highlight of "Gold Diggers of 1933" is the lilting, swirling
"Shadow Waltz." The Al Dubin lyrics are poetic, but hardly ever
sung today. What survives is Warren's beatifully constructed waltz theme,
a superior piece of composition that takes its place among the handful of
great american waltzes. In "Gold Diggers of 1933" Buzby Berkely
put the music to striking and tasteful effect, with a group of girls waltzing
while playing the violin. With a variety of camera angles, and cuts skillfully
matching the rhythm, Berkely whirls his girls to an engaging pattern of sight
and sound, including blackout shots in which the violins are edged with neon
lighting. Few seqences in movie musicals would ever equal the charm and grace
of this beguiling "Shadow Waltz." |
