Hard To Get
After the departure of Al Dubin from the Warners Studio and their contract, he left for New York where he later died, sadly it was the end of a great period in Warner's musical history. Harry was paired with a lyricist, Johhny Mercer, who was assigned to him during the film "Garden of the Moon" which marked the end of Al's career - and the begining of the Warren - Mercer pairing which later reaped many memorable songs as well.
Dick Powell sings "You Must Have Been A Beautiful Baby"
Warren and Mercer's first hit was "You Must Have Been A Beautiful Baby" which is the most memorable hit from the film. Here, is Dick Powell, playing a business man trying to woo the beautiful heiress, Olivia De Haviland. Singing from the Rowboat in the lake, the scene was one of the many noted in Warner's documents as an example of how musicals were made. The song, would be recorded on records, than the singer, would lip sync the songs while the camera's rolled. Most of the time, it worked out well, but this particular scene was a dissapointment - rather wooden and not one of Dick Powells best.
Another song written by Warren and Mercer was "There's a Sunny Side to Every Situation" which Dick Powell hums while he goes about his business around the gas station. Too bad it didn't become a musical number, because its a gem of a song - and the film sure could have used some help! All in All, this picture was somewhat of a dissapointment, but still showcased some songs that remain in peoples memories today.
